Jenny Coburn is a Senior Lecturer with the Cairnmillar Institute. She began her career as a counsellor in 1992, later becoming a registered psychologist. Over the past 25 years, she has worked in private practice, non-government organisations, therapeutic communities, residential rehabilitation centres and corporate environments, specialising in alcohol and other drug counselling and mental health. Jenny has had many years of experience working with mandated clients and has had extensive experience in assessment and court reporting. She is trained in Cognitive Behaviour therapies, Humanistic and Post-modern therapeutic approaches (Narrative Therapy and Solution Focused). Jenny shares the Course Coordinator duties for the Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Masters of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Research Interests

Jenny’s research interests span counselling and educational areas. Jenny is interested in stigma responses amongst the helping profession; the lived experience of chronic health conditions; the impact of peer support when living with a chronic condition. Jenny also has an interest in transformative learning and teaching, including the student experience in higher education, student persistence and creating ethical learning environments. Jenny is currently a PhD candidate exploring how counsellors work productively in ambiguous and uncertain situations and how the concept of ‘phronesis’ (practice wisdom) might be applied to field of counselling and professional education.

Leadership Positions and Awards

Jenny is a Past President of SCAPE (Society of Counselling and Psychotherapy Educators) and Founding Convenor of the PACFA College ACCAPE (Australian College of Counselling and Psychotherapy Educators). She is a current Co-Convenor of the 2019 PACFA Conference Working with Trauma. She has received a Teaching Excellence Award in 2011 from the Australian College of Applied Psychology (ACAP), and a Contribution to College Award in 2012 for outstanding contribution to education (ACAP).
